Experiences of Older Women in Canada: Findings from the NIA’s 2025 Ageing in Canada Survey
Older women in Canada are living longer than men, but many are ageing with greater financial insecurity, loneliness and exposure to ageism, according to a new report released today by the National Institute on Ageing (NIA) in partnership with the International Longevity Centre Canada (ILC Canada).

Moving Forward with UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons
ILC-Canada joined EAPO, CNPEA, and GAROP to provided an informative session with updates on the work of the UN Open Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA14) including the historic decision on April 3rd, 2025 by the 58th Human Rights Council in Geneva to start drafting a UN convention on the rights of older persons, a legally binding instrument.
With this new chapter, we begin building a world where everyone can live and age with the dignity and respect they deserve.

World Psychiatric Association Support for Advancing Human Rights of Older Persons at the 58th Session of the Human Rights Council
The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) commends the efforts of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) and the core group of Member States in addressing the critical issue of the human rights of older persons. The WPA wishes to express its full support for the full, meaningful and effective participation of older people and civil society in any new process that is created for older persons' human rights as the HRC prepares for its 58th session.

We urge you to consider sending this letter ASAP to the Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister for Seniors, with CC’s to Ministers Joly (Foreign Affairs) and Virani (Justice) whose email addresses are in the letter. We also encourage you to share the letter with your Member of Parliament (MP) and have included a link to contact information for federal MPs. Please note that while the letter is somewhat technical, it correctly reflects the UN process for creating a working group on older persons human rights.
